It's a new semester with new students and some new and old ideas! I love High School Musical songs hence the title of this entry! We began the year with a writing unit to review basic skills and cover the writing process in depth. The 5 Steps of the Writing Process are (1) Prewriting, (2) Drafting, (3) Revising, (4) Editing, (5) Publishing. Students have been practicing with each of these skills in preparation for their first formal writing assignment, COMING SOON! Additionally, students were assigned their first novel, Tuesdays With Morrie or The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, for outside reading. Students are expected to take notes as they read and keep a list of 15 aphorisms, or life lessons. Students will read the first book and then switch with classmates to read the other book, again keeping a list of 15 aphorisms, (30 total). Students are expected to quote the aphorism and then elaborate/explain its significance and what it means. At the end of the reading, students will use their list to complete a compare and contrast essay about the life lessons learned by the main characters from both books. Class discussions with their literature discussion groups will occur in class, and students are expected to be prepared. Students will also be given quizzes at random and will be expected to complete additional assignments related to the novels as assigned. |
